Author: Joseph Addison

Joseph Addison (1672-1719) was an English essayist, poet, and dramatist, who, with Richard Steele, was a leading contributor to and guiding spirit of the periodicals, The Tatler and The Spectator. His writing skill led to his holding important posts in government while the Whigs were in power in England. Addison took the Grand Tour of Europe in 1699, leading to this Italian travelogue, the manuscript of which he sent home for publication before his own return.
